Don’t Be Left in the Dark
Sport-related and other trauma-based concussions are on the rise in all age groups! If you or someone you love suffers a concussion make sure your treatment team includes a Physical Therapist who is up to date on concussion management. Carrie DePerro, PT , Karen McDonald, PT, and Matt Seabrook, PT are DPT’s lead clinicians in terms of post-concussion treatment. They attend regular continuing education to stay current with the most up-to-date treatment recommendations for persons with post-concussion syndrome.
Below are just a few highlights from a recent multi-disciplinary conference in Philadelphia:
- No medications or vitamins have been shown to be effective to improve healing
- Prolonged rest may actually delay recovery
- Return to sport too soon delays recovery and may be life threatening
- Head Impact Sensors are not reliable or accurate
- Most protective equipment does not reduce the risk of concussions
- Progressive, guided aerobic exercise is crucial for recovery. DPT’s concussion team can help prescribe the appropriate amount of biking, walking or running for each person
- Attendance at school is extremely important following a concussion although accommodations (taking breaks, reduced school work, homework, preprinted notes) are frequently recommended
- Screening for anxiety and depression is essential
