Why are ergonomics important?
  • Proper ergonomic setup will decrease the stress on your body and limit potential injuries
Common injuries associated with poor ergonomics:
  • Overuse injuries- typically repetitive movement patterns or positions that over time cause trauma to different muscles, joints, nerves and blood vessels.
Signs or symptoms associated with a poor ergonomic setup?
  • Decreased tolerance to activity or position
  • Early fatigue or pain with an activity that previously was pain free
  • Typical areas of injury- Neck, elbow, wrist, thumb, and low back
Proper Body Mechanics
  • Always keep objects close to your body when lifting and carrying
  • Bend with your legs, not your back
  • Keep your knees, hips and shoulders pointing in the same direction
  • Avoid working overhead- use a step stool or ladder to keep work at shoulder height
  • Assess a situation before attempting a task and ask yourself: Is there a safer way to do this?
Injury Prevention is the Key
  • Stretch often
  • Review your ergonomic setup with your physical therapist
  • Seek help if symptoms do not resolve within a month
  • Don’t be Superman… Ask for help!!!
