Common Conditions of the Foot and Ankle

Plantar fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a thick band of fibrous tissue that runs from your heel to the base of your toes. Foot structure, wearing inappropriate shoe wear, being overweight, or running are just some things that can cause inflammation of this tissue. The hallmark sign of plantar fasciitis is first step pain; pain that occurs with your first steps out of bed in the morning but decreases the more steps you take.

Heel spur: A heel spur is an excessive bone growth that occurs where soft tissue attaches to bone, most commonly on the underside of the heel. Bone spurs due not always cause pain, so many people do not know they have them unless they have an x-ray of their foot. Bone spurs are commonly associated with plantar fasciitis.

Gout: Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a build up of uric acid in the joints. One of the first places for this build up to occur is the big toe. The toe will get warm, red, swollen, and be painful to touch. The best way to prevent a gout attack is to learn to identify the triggers and avoid them.

Achilles tendinitis: Achilles tendinitis occurs when the large tendon that runs down the back of your lower leg gets inflamed.Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury. The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscle to your heel and is used when you walk, run, climb stairs, jump, or stand on your tip toes. A sudden increase in the amount or intensity of exercise or having tight calf muscles are factors that may put you at risk for developing Achilles tendinitis.
