McKenzie Method & Spinal Care (Certified)
At Dresher Physical Therapy, we offer treatment of the spine using mechanical diagnosis and treatment or “The McKenzie Method.” Most spinal pain is “mechanical” in nature, meaning that an applied force caused the pain. According to the McKenzie theory, the reverse can relieve the pain and restore normal function.
If you are unfamiliar with the McKenzie Method, consider the following:
- The McKenzie Method focuses on patient education and active self-treatment strategies. This empowers the patient and results in fewer future episodes of back pain.
- The McKenzie principles determine if a patient will respond to mechanical intervention or if referral to a different specialist is needed. Thus avoiding longer periods of inappropriate management.
- 80% of patients with mechanical spinal pain with radicular symptoms will respond to the McKenzie Method. Of those patients, 85% will respond favorably within 10-14 days.
- The average number of rehab visits per episode of mechanical spinal pain in the hands of an experienced McKenzie clinician is 6.
- Several studies have found the McKenzie principles to be associated with a range of positive outcomes-higher return-to-work rates, greater pain reduction and higher functional performance.
